We Are Respectful. We Are Safe. Tell us about yourself and how long you have been a member of the Kettering Recreation Complex. I’ve been a member since March 2024, when I signed up for the Personal Fitness Guidance Package. I was hesitant about signing up and procrastinated for months before making that initial inquiry. Within an hour after I submitted the online form, Greg called, introduced himself, and asked about my fitness goals, my fitness level, and how soon I wanted to start. I think I met him that day and I have been training with him ever since at the Kettering Recreation Complex. How do you feel about the progress you have made? How has Greg helped in your success? Before starting at the Kettering Recreation Complex, I considered myself reasonably fit for my age. I did yoga, walked, and rode my bike, weather permitting, but didn’t feel strong. I struggled to get up from the floor and wasn’t confident in my balance. I had achy joints and was constantly injuring myself during my home workouts. I saw close relatives settle into a sedentary lifestyle and watched them struggle to do the things they loved. I had just retired and wanted to continue to enjoy an active life. Working with Greg, I am light years from where I started. I’m a retired educator, and the first rule of teaching is to know your student's strengths and areas of challenge. Greg understands this. We check in at the start of each session: How am I feeling? Do I have any problem areas? Is there anything I want to work on? He knows when to push me and when to move on if he sees me struggling. My workout is never boring. I trust his expertise, even if I’m uncomfortable. For the first time since my 40s, my hips and knees don’t ache. My balance has improved, I am much stronger, can get up from the floor easily, and have lost 16 pounds. I leave my hour with Greg thinking, “I didn’t know I could do that!” What goals are you continuing to strive for? I love working with Greg at the Kettering Recreation Complex. I know that showing up and being accountable to someone is critical to my success. I like being pushed to my physical limit. I would like to add swimming to my routine and have signed up for lessons because I need a refresher. My mantra is strength and balance. I’m working out now for my 70, 75, and 80-year-old self. Is there anything else you would like to add? Having access to the Kettering Recreation Complex and its programs is such a great benefit to me personally and to our community. I’ve tried other fitness programs, but working with Greg at the Kettering Recreation Complex has made all the difference. Fitness Spotlight: Renee Hawkins
